What is

CPAP

A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine that is used to treat obstructive sleep apnoea.  It works by continuously delivering air through your mouth or nose.  It involves a mask that fits over your nose and/or your mouth connected by a tube to a machine.

It is a very common method to treat sleep apnoea and is also very effective.  Its normally thought of as the gold standard when treating severe sleep apnoea.  Its also used by people across the globe successfully.

However it does come with some negatives.  For some patients the mask can be uncomfortable, cause dryness or even a sense of claustrophobia.  Others suffer from aerophagia (swallowing too much air) or other discomfort.  But perhaps the most common issue is social – many users are unable to sleep in the same bed as their partner due to noise, the bulk of the machine or embarrassment.

How does CPAP compareto an oral appliance?

Both a mandibular advancement splint and CPAP can be effective for treating sleep apnoea.  It really comes down to your individual needs.  Severe sleep apnoea patients and those with complex medical needs may be more suitable for CPAP.  For mild to moderate patients the comfort of an oral appliance may be a better option.  Its really a discussion for the each individual to have with their treating clinician to have.

Do you offer CPAP Treatment?

We will perform an evaluation at your consult appointment to see if you are a good candidate.  Generally your teeth should be in a stable condition and any dental work needed be completed prior.  If you wear a partial or full denture we are still able to make a mandibular advancement splint in most cases.

Are there otheroptions available?

Other options may include surgical procedures such as jaw or ENT surgery that is best discussed with your medical professional.  Lifestyle changes such as losing weight, reducing alcohol intake and cessation of smoking are also fantastic options to help improve OSA.
