About sleep apnoea and snoring
Do I need a sleep study before treatment?
Yes. To diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea you need a sleep study (polysomnography) interpreted by a sleep physician. If you haven’t had one, your GP can refer you, or we can refer you at your first consultation. For snoring-only without OSA, a sleep study isn’t always required but is still recommended.
How do I know if my snoring is sleep apnoea?
Snoring without breathing pauses is usually a social problem rather than a medical one. Snoring with witnessed pauses, gasping, choking, or daytime sleepiness usually indicates sleep apnoea. The only way to confirm is a sleep study. See the full symptom list.
Is sleep apnoea dangerous if untreated?
Yes. Untreated OSA is linked to a 30% increased risk of heart attack and stroke, raised blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, depression, and a 2.5× higher risk of motor vehicle accidents from drowsy driving.
About the oral appliance (MAS)
What is a mandibular advancement splint?
A thin, custom-made nylon device worn over your upper and lower teeth at night. It gently advances your lower jaw and tongue forward, opening the airway so air can flow freely. It’s silent, comfortable, and pocket-sized.
Does it actually work?
For mild to moderate OSA, oral appliances have a very high success rate. Recent studies show they also help many patients with severe OSA, especially those who cannot tolerate CPAP.
Will it hurt my teeth or jaw?
Some patients experience mild jaw soreness or tooth movement in the first weeks. We measure your protrusive bite carefully to minimise this, and review you regularly to catch any issues early. Buying an over-the-counter “boil and bite” device skips this protection and frequently causes significant jaw pain.
Can I buy one online?
You can — but you shouldn’t. Online and over-the-counter devices are not custom-fitted, perform poorly at treating OSA, and commonly cause jaw pain and tooth movement. A professionally-made nylon MAS is the proven option.
How long does treatment take from first visit to wearing the appliance?
Typically 2–4 weeks: consultation → 3D scan and bite registration → lab manufactures the appliance → fitting appointment.
How long does the appliance last?
With proper care, 3–5 years for the appliance itself. We review it at intervals to check fit and adjust as needed.
About cost and health funds
How much does it cost?
$2,350 all-inclusive for your nylon MAS, fitting, and reviews. See the full cost breakdown.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes — interest-free from $41 per week over 12 months, no deposit required.
Will my health fund rebate this?
Most major funds rebate oral appliances under codes 965 or 984. Typical out-of-pocket reductions are $400 to $1,200. We are preferred providers for Medibank, Bupa, HCF, nib, CBHS and HIF.
Is it covered by Medicare?
Generally no, except in limited circumstances under a GP-issued Chronic Disease Management plan. Bring any CDM referral to your consultation.
