A mandibular advancement splint (MAS) is an oral appliance that is worn in your mouth and sits over your top and bottom teeth. It’s a comfortable, non-surgical option that allows you to reduce your snoring and drowsiness symptoms.
It works by pushing your lower jaw and tongue forward, opening your airway and allowing air to circulate. Made from nylon or acrylic, the oral appliances are thin and well tolerated and allows you to go back to sleeping in the same room as your partner.
Doesit work?
Oral appliances have been shown to be very effective in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea and snoring. Studies show a very high success rate for those who suffer from mild to moderate sleep apnoea, and recent studies indicate that mandibular advancement splints can be a suitable option for those with severe sleep apnoea. Like all treatments there are risks and these are best discussed with your dentist to ensure it’s the right option for you.
Am I suitablecandidate for a MAS?
We will perform an evaluation at your consult appointment to see if you are a good candidate. Generally your teeth should be in a stable condition and any dental work needed be completed prior. If you wear a partial or full denture we are still able to make a mandibular advancement splint in most cases.
Can I buy aMAS Online?
To have an oral appliance (MAS) made for treatment of sleep apnoea or snoring, firstly your snoredentist needs to make a careful assessment of the health of your current teeth and jaws. Not everyone is suitable for an MAS and we need to ensure that your teeth are in suitable condition for an oral appliance. Then a careful digital scan is taken and a protrusive bite is carefully measured to ensure side effects such as jaw pain and tooth movement are minimised.
Buying an over the counter or online boil and bite appliance will likely be ill-fitting, bulky and most often lead to significant jaw pain. They also perform poorly in reducing the symptoms of sleep apnoea and snoring. A customised nylon device made by a dental professional is most likely to lead to a long term, comfortable and effective solution
What is the Costof a MAS Appliance?
The cost of the nylon mandibular advancement splint, including your reviews, is $2,350 all inclusive — before your health fund rebate. Most patients receive $400–$1,200 back from their fund; we’re preferred providers for Medibank Private, Bupa, HCF, CBHS, nib and HIF, which means a higher rebate percentage. Payment plans available from ~$45 a week over 12 months, interest-free. The cost of a MAS is similar to a CPAP machine, but generally accepted to be far more comfortable and portable.
